Biography

Name

Iorwerth ap Madog[1]

Birth and Parents

Iorwerth ap Madog ap Llewelyn, born c. 1125. His wife is unknown. [2]

His father was Madog ap Llewelyn ap Ithel Hen, born c. 1095. His wife is unknown. [3]

His grandfather was Llewelyn ap Ithel Hen ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, born c. 1065. His wife is unknown, who was also the ancestor of Tangwystl (see above). [4]

His great-grandfather was Ithel Hen ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog, born c. 1036. His wife is unknown. [5]

Ithel Hen was the son of Llewelyn ap Coel ap Gweirydd, born c. 1005. He was sent at age 14 to serve at the court of King Llewelyn ap Seisyllt, and remained at court when that man died in 1023. Cynfyn ap Gwerystan married the king's widow to become the step-father of young Gruffudd. Installed as the interim king of Powys, Cynfyn brought to court with him three young daughters by a first wife. About 1033, Llewelyn married one of those daughters, Efa (c. 1020). When Gruffudd ap Llewelyn became old enough to stake a kingship claim, he chose Llewelyn ap Coel as his senior official...the penteulu or leader of his warband. It was during that service he donned the gold torc which was the ancient symbol of a Celtic battle leader, and became better known as Llewelyn Aurdorchog. As a reward for his services, he was granted the commote of Ial located just south of Ystrad Alun. [6]

Llewelyn was the son of Coel ap Gweirydd ap Cynwrig, born c. 975. He inheirited Ystrad Alun and the manor called Bryn near Rhuddlan. After serving king Llewelyn ap Seisyllt (c. 980), he married a sister (c. 990) of that Llewelyn and had 2 sons, Llewelyn and Ithel. [7]

Coel was the son of Gweirydd ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam, born c. 945. Gweirydd received Ystrad Alun and a part of the Tegeingl manor, electing to reside at the latter. His wife is unknown. [8]

Gweirydd was the son of Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam ap Elgudy, born c. 915. Cynwrig inheirited his father's lands, which included Ystrad Alun, Dyffryn Clwyd and a sizaeable manor near Rhuddlan in Tegeingl. His wife is unknown. [9]

Cynwrig was the son of Cynddelw Gam ap Elgudy, born c. 880. As a young man, Cynddelw accompanied his father in the engagement which cleared Danish squatters from Tegeingl and the Clwyd valley. His uncorrected vision required him to squint when viewing anything from close up and earned him the nickname "Gam". Born in mid-Powys near Deuddwr, he settled in Ystrad Alun on lands granted to his father by Selyf ap Brochwel, king of Powys, around the year 900/905. His wife is unknown. [10]

  6. Wolcott notes:
    • Cae Cyriog Ms and B.M. Add. 9864 cite "Llewelyn Aurdorchog ap Coel ap Gweirydd" married "Efa ferch Cynfyn ap Gwerystan". Harl. 1972, 135 and Harl. 1977, 226 incorrectly emended that to "Efa ferch Bleddyn ap Cynfyn" by mis-dating Llewelyn Aurdorchog one generation forward.
    • Dwnn i, 308 cites "Llewelyn Aurdorchog" as father to Llewelyn Fychan
    • No sources cite the ancestry of Ithel Hen; Dwnn ii, 300, note 3 calls him "of the tribe of Ial". Chronologically, he fits as a son of Llewelyn Aurdorchog; most pedigrees call Ithel Felyn such a son, but only our construction fits both men
    • Dwnn ii, 243 cites "Llewelyn Aurdorchog" as father to Owain Aurdorchog but Cae Cyriog Ms and others call this son Ednowain Aurdorchog.
    • Pen. 287, 181 cites "Gwenllian ferch Rhys ap Llewelyn Aurdorchog" married "Ithel ap Eunydd'
*All other children attributed to Llewelyn Aurdorchog by various pedigrees actually belong to other (later) men in the family named Llewelyn; these include Ithel Felyn, Iorwerth, Idris, Gwgan and Dolffyn, plus a lady named Nest. 7. Wolcott notes:
    • Pen. 131, 286 and Pen. 128, 186 cite "Coel ap Gweirydd" as father of Llewelyn Aurdorchog
    • The marriage of Coel to a sister of King Llewelyn ap Seisyllt is our suggestion; since Coel's son served as penteulu for Gruffudd ap Llewelyn ap Seisyllt and since that position was reserved by law to a near relative of the king, we posit the men were first cousins
    • No source gives the ancestry of this Ithel; we suggest he was a younger brother of Llewelyn Aurdorchog. Cited by Darrell Wolcott, Ancient Wales Studies. Pedigree of Cynddelw Gam of Ystrad Alun, retrieved 2014-06-10, amb
  8. Pen. 131, 286 cites "Coel ap Gweirydd ap Cynddelw Gam" which lacks one generation to be chronologically satisfactory. Bartrum would make Gweirydd the son of Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam and we concur. Cited by Darrell Wolcott, Ancient Wales Studies. Pedigree of Cynddelw Gam of Ystrad Alun, retrieved 2014-06-10, amb
  9. Pen. 131, 286 cites "Gweirydd ap Cynddelw Gam" while HLG 5a cites "Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam". Both the chronology and Peter Bartrum suggest the correct form is "Gweirydd ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam" ABT 1c cites "Marchen ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam"; ABT 6i cites "Pyll ap Cynwrig ap Cynddelw Gam". 10. ABT 1c and HLG 5a cite "Cynddelw Gam ap Elgudy ap Gwrysnadd" as father of Cynwrig. Cited by Darrell Wolcott, Ancient Wales Studies. Pedigree of Cynddelw Gam of Ystrad Alun, retrieved 2014-06-10, amb
